By popular (2019 parental) demand I am starting up the 2019 version of this thread.
I started the 2017 one and found it an incredibly enriching experience and very helpful with my S17 who is now a happy freshman after experiencing a successful application season.
This is from the original post that kicked of the 2017 thread and I think it all still holds true.
As a guideline, this is not a chance thread for students. It is for parents of kids roughly in the B to B+ range with any range of test scores. Of course, all parents are welcome, but it is not meant for the top of the line, applying to Ivies sorts of dilemmas. Advice from parents of other years is definitely appreciated!
Things to talk and think about now
1. Test Prep
2. School Visits & casting WIDE nets
3. Fit & LOVING ALL OUR SCHOOLS
4. Possible Financial/Merit aid
5. Books to assist our quest of the perfect school for our children.
6. Requesting LOR's before school gets out
And as we get close to and into senior year:
1. Applications (EA vs. ED vs. RD), essay prompts, etc.
2. Auditions (music, dance, theatre)
3. Senior year visits & overnights
4. The Waiting Game of acceptances
5. Reviewing award letters
6. Committing and sending in that check!
So, pour another cup of coffee (or tea), bookmark this thread, and start posting!
I will post an intro to get us started and then updated links to resources the 2017 parents used as well as our results thread. It was a very successful season for the 2017 kids and I expect the same for our amazing 2019'ers!

Northeastern University 2019 RD
Hi All,
This thread is for any discussion/decisions for RD admissions this year!
The official decision date is by April 1st, but historically decisions are released earlier, likely within the range of 3/13 to 3/21 of this year. It will also likely be Tuesday-Thursday with Wednesday being the most common weekday in recent application rounds. Decisions will roll out over a single day geographically radiating out from Boston starting around 4PM EST. A small group of acceptances was released around February 13th, but this is a tiny fraction of the applicant pool.
Some notes for those hearing back:
Release Times
Waves are released hourly on the hour, loosely by geography. Decisions are available on the portal on the hour with emails often coming 30 minutes or more after decisions are available, so if you're anxious to hear back I'd recommend checking hourly around when your location is expected to hear back. Here are some estimated time ranges:
New England: 4-6PM EST
NY/NJ: 5-6PM EST
Mid-Atlantic (PA, MD, VA, etc): 6-7PM EST
Southern States + Midwest: 7-8PM EST
West Coast: 8-9PM EST
International: Varies
Posting Decisions
To all those posting decisions, including the following info would be greatly helpful to people this year and especially in future years. The hope is to compile this information to give some numbers to future applicant pools. Feel free to post as much information of this as you are comfortable with. It shouldn't have to be said, but numbers do not define you, this is only for statistical purposes :)

Thanks and good luck to all!

New Here. Where are the discussions for B Students?
Hello all. I am fascinated with what I am seeing so far on this website. A lot of posts are just like this: "Hi, I'm totally freaking out because I don't know what to do! I have a 4.4 GPA and my SAT score was only 1560. I play the violin in my local youth orchestra, and teach Excel to inner-city youth on the weekends. I wrote my first novel this summer! In my free time, I play chess. I should also note that I will be traveling to Flint, Michigan this spring break to help solve the water crisis. I'm pretty sure I want to go to Princeton, but PLEASE CHANCE ME for Yale!" Question: Are there any non-Superman students or parents on this site? I am struggling to find resources for B and/or "average" students. It seems that only the overachievers are here. If this is what is happening in the college admissions rat race....Wow.

Let's Play the Boarding School Guessing Game!
I know...it's kind of a random game, it just popped into my head. The first poster names a few fun facts about a school (can't be obvious, for example, this school is in Deerfield, MA). You can name, let's say, anywhere from 3 to 5 facts. The following posters will then try to guess the school! If someone responds correctly, please let them know!
Example (using fake screen names):
iamreallycool:
- Mascot is a wild boar
- Ivanka Trump went there
- 859 students
iwantfabulous: Exeter
highschoolmusical: Choate!
iamreallycool: The correct answer is Choate!
I'll start...
- Includes the "PHI"
- Offers lifeguard training
- Mascot is a large water bird.
Have fun!

Do Parents Ever Cross a Line by Helping Too Much With Schoolwork?
"... — How do your parents — or, perhaps, a tutor or older sibling — help you with schoolwork? Do they read over or edit your essays? When you’re stuck on a math problem, do they get involved? Do they work with you on projects or help you study for tests? Do they help you in other ways, too, by making sure you are organized or reminding you not to procrastinate?" ...
Student opinion.

Class of 2023 undergrad/Class of 2021 grad: The Tours, the Auditions, the Journey
Having learned so much from @SpartanDrew 's thread for the previous class, I'd love to invite parents of current juniors to share their impressions, advice, frustrations and joys as we start the process. My S19 is a sax player, primarily tenor/jazz, and thinks he might want to teach as well. Fairly academic kid. Plays all the saxes and piano.
So far we've looked at Berklee (he did the five-week there last summer), Ithaca (joint jazz performance/music ed option makes this one very attractive). Coming up: Eastman (jazz workshop this summer), Rutgers (in-state NJ, open house on April 21) and visits to Peabody/Johns Hopkins and Syracuse. Still trying to build the list; one thing I've learned from reading about the class of 2022 is to apply to a wide range of schools,
Would love to hear from others starting this journey. What is your kid's background, and what is s/he looking for? Have you done any tours? What are your impressions so far?
ETA: It will be fun to look back later and see how our kids change on this journey!

PSA - Program for System Admissions
http://admissions.tamu.edu/psa
Program for System Admission (PSA) PSA stands for the Program for System Admission offers students who are denied freshman admission the opportunity to enroll in a Texas A&M system school for one year with the intention of achieving guaranteed transfer admission to Texas A&M College Station upon successful completion of the program. Approximately 10500 students were given the PSA option.
TAMU uses predetermined class rank/test scores minimums to qualify you for guaranteed admission at various System Institutions. Most students are eligible for automatic admission at all 8 System Institutions, but some students aren’t.
The big advantage of PSA is that it does indeed provide a GUARANTEE of admission for any students who successfully satisfy the requirements. It GUARANTEES admission into a specific major as well.
The PSA was designed for students who are interested in a participating major. A&M Never recommends using the PSA to be admitted to TAMU with the intention of switching to a major you really want. They recommend taking the coursework and making the grades for your intended major and then applying as a standard transfer student, directly to your intended major.
You can still attend a system school, or other institution, but you will have to apply as a regular transfer and go through the competitive process.
What if the System Institution doesn’t have my intended major?
The major choice at the System Institution does not matter. All that matters is that the System Institution will allow you to take the courses you need for your intended PSA major at TAMU.
Can I start taking courses at the System Institution during the summer?
Yes, if you get everything set up with your System Institution. However, the PSA requires the students to complete two long semesters at the System Institution to be eligible for automatic admission. Taking summer courses is also very important if you will need to complete any prerequisite courses (i.e., Math).
