ED strategy for LACs (Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin, Middlebury)?

$

My daughter is interested in the top LACs (more detail below) and is trying to work out how she should approach deciding on one school to apply ED to. A quick recap of her stats and our situation: 3.8UW GPA, 35 ACT (36 in Science, 35 in the other subjects), completed 5 APs so far (5s on World History, Japanese, and Lang, 4s on Microeconomics and APES) and currently enrolled in 4 more (Calc AB, Lit, Psych, and Gov). Biggest EC is that she founded her school's ACLU Club as a sophomore and has been president ever since. It's up to 30 members now, and they do voter registration drives, wrote a know-your-rights guide for students in the district, etc. She's also done a lot of work as a tech in theater, as well as Model UN, SAGA, and a couple other things. She also is the DM for her D&D club and makes her own cosplay - which might help her stand out a little. She is half-Japanese, and we live in Washington State. We're not rich, but we're comfortable paying full tuition, so financial aid won't be a consideration. Over the summer she applied to several diversity fly-in programs. (There was another thread where it was discussed whether being half-Japanese really met the colleges' criteria for a minority - and whether trying to apply to these fly-in programs could actually hurt her if they thought she was trying to crowd in on a program that wasn't meant for her. Ultimately she decided to apply and was glad she did.) She only got into 1 (one which she had visited in the past and liked), but several others gave her nice consolation responses. A few waived her application fee and a subset of those arranged for a time for her to speak 1:1 with either a current student or someone from the admissions office. When they did this, they specified in their letters that they don't do this for all of the rejected applicants - they only do this for people they're genuinely interested in. (In fact, Williams went so far to say that the admissions rate for people they extend these benefits to have historically had 2x the admissions rate compared to other applicants.) The ones that did this were Williams (waived application fee and arranged for call with AO), Amherst (waived application fee), and Middlebury (waived application fee and arranged for call with AO). Grinnell didn't waive the application fee, but they arranged for her to speak with a current student (and they didn't say that this was something they only do for a handful of applicants). She got into the Haverford fly-in program which she'll be attending in a couple weeks. In terms of her top school preferences, she's utterly torn. I think she's considering Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin, and Middlebury as her top choices so far. Even though they are all quite different, there are things she likes about each school, and her personality is such that I do think she would be genuinely happy at any of these places. She's really interested in the tutorial program at Williams and likes the idea of an isolated campus. On the other hand, she also likes the consortium opportunities at Amherst and the fact that there's a little town nearby. (We visited Amherst but haven't been able to go to Williams or Middlebury.) She was interested in Bowdoin's friendly culture and strong Poli Sci and Env. Science programs, and the international nature of Middlebury. I asked her if she got into all 4, which would she pick, and she said she honestly didn't know. So right now she's trying to work out which, if any, of these schools to apply ED to. As I said, I think she'd be deliriously happy at any of them, so I don't think there'd be a concern of regret over not being able to find out whether she would have gotten into the other schools. At this point, I think she'd like to pick the application path that will maximize her chances of getting in at one of these schools. Williams and Amherst only have ED1 - no ED2 option, so we were thinking that she might want to apply to one of those first. The response from Williams/Amherst would be back in time for her to apply ED2 at either Middlebury or Bowdoin, so she'd have essentially 2 bites at the apple. I'm thinking that of the 4 schools, Bowdoin would be the lowest probability of getting in, since they just gave her a flat rejection to the diversity fly-in program whereas the other 3 expressed interest in her. (I could be reading too much into that though.) So is this the right way to think about it? Williams or Amherst ED1 and Middlebury or Bowdoin ED2? And how much does ED really help at each of these schools anyway? I know that admit rates are much higher for ED than RD, but I've also heard that those stats are distorted by the fact that recruited athletes tend to get in ED. Thoughts? And thanks in advance!

What are my chances of getting into Texas A&M University?

So I'm a high school senior and all my life I have wanted to go to A&M. My whole family has gone there, and it's the only place I will even consider going, I'm not even applying anywhere else (I can always do the Blinn TEAM if I;m not accepted). I haven't been able to get a straight answer on what my chances are. I'm not an automatic admit because of some health problems that caused me a lot of trouble my junior year. My GPA is a 3.64 out of 4.0 (92.5333) and my rank is top 35% (187 of 526) . I have taken the SAT 3 times, my highest score being a 1350 (710 reading/ writing, 640 math) and my lowest being a 1320 (650 reading/writing, 670 math). I'm also planning of taking it 2 more times. I have taken the SAT twice, my scores being 29 and 28. I also took 3 AP classes. I want to major in Animal Science and eventually go to the vet school. I have volunteered/interned at a vet clinic for 4 months, and I now have a job at another clinic. I actually got one of the doctors to write one of my recommendation letters. I'm in NHS and I was treasurer of my school's art history club for 1 year and a member for 3 years. I have also visited campus twice and I'm signed up to spend the night with the corps. I KNOW that I am good enough for this school, but my numbers don't reflect it. I really hate how A&M doesn't even look at your GPA, only your rank (that's what the admissions officer told me). If only they knew me, they'd see how well I'd thrive at this school.

The "Bag A Week" Club

:) The NY resolution thread has many saying they have a goal of purging a bag a week in 2014. Great idea - donate stuff or trash stuff. Thought it would be great to keep each other on track to share what cracks, crevices, drawers and corners of the basement and attic we conquer as we go through the weeks and share what we are tossing - for motivation, for inspiration and for ideas on areas we can all reduce. Are you in??! :) This morning I started with a small bag - I have a small desk area in the kitchen and purged MANY old coupons, warranty info that has expired, receipts galore and other paper junk. Let the purging begin!!!!

USC SCA Class of 2023 Discussion

Hello all! I'm a rising senior living in the UK and doing a French baccalaureat (confusing, I know). I'm going to apply to the Film and Television Production major. As of right now, I've just started my application and I was wondering if anyone had any admission tips or if any current students would like to share their experience at SCA. I just thought it would be a good place to discuss everything SCA for this year's applicants. Good luck to everyone!

Dorm room reasonable compromises

I am helping guide my child on some issues with one of 2 roommates. That roommate studies a lot and wants to study in the triple dorm room. When studying, that roommate wants the other roommates to be quiet (not talking to each other) and the roommate wants the 2 overhead lights on. My child wants to talk to her 3rd roommate in the evenings in the room and wants to go to sleep (on the early side, around 10) with overhead lights off. Efforts so far are that my child uses a sleep mask, and roommate listens to music on headphones when studying. Third roommate agrees with my child. Child has approached roommate without luck and I am just trying to get a sense of what is reasonable, when one roommate wants to use the room as a quiet study space, and the others view it more as a living space.

My son visited AU a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. I was hoping some of you had more insight to the admissions process. I had read on some of last year's posts that students with high stats were being waitlisted, while other students with lower stats were being admitted, possibly in a move to protect their yield. Could this really true? My son's superscored SAT is a 1450, 4.0 uw, and really good extracurriculars. I'd hate to see him waitlisted at a school he's seriously interested in and qualified to attend simply because the school is worried about their numbers :( Also interested in any input on the Frederick Douglass Scholarship Program (does he stand a chance?) and the Honors Program if anyone has any input! Thanks in advance!

USC/NYU/RISD/SCAD for film??

What are some of best schools that provide good film majors? (not only based on coursework but career opportunities as well) Aside from USC/NYU/RISD/SCAD, I've also heard that Chapman is good, as well as non-film schools like UCLA and Yale. My ideal is a college that has liberal arts education and offers a fulfilling film program.

Dental implants

There were some old closed threads about this, so I am starting a new one. Family member has been told that they need dental implant for damaged lower second molar. This is a young person with TMJ. Dentist will do Plasma Rich Growth Factors(PDGF), if after extraction they feel bone is lacking. Dentist does use CT scanning for surgery. Seems like it takes a long time (from extraction to completion will be over 6 months). Also the quoted cost is $7,000 (without the cost of the dentist putting in the actual crown - haven't got that estimate yet). Insurance will pay for nothing! Any experiences people have? How long will the new tooth last? Any tips/recommendations? What should I know and ask?

Opinions about my college list

Hello, I would appreciate some outside insight about my list of colleges to apply to, and any recommendations of schools to add. About me: -Graduated high school this June and currently taking a gap year, planning to start college in the fall of 2019 -Went to a small public arts school and studied creative writing -Home state: Maryland -1390 superscored SAT (1380 in one sitting) -I can't find my final transcript, but my GPA ended up being something like 4.15 W/3.9 UW -Class rank: 6/66 -ECs: Editor of school literary magazine (3 years), founder and president of Key Club (2 years), NHS (member 2 years and historian 1 year), currently interning with a grassroots organization -Budget: 20-25k after aid (EFC last year was about $21k) -What I want out of a college: Urban or suburban setting; mid-Atlantic region; liberal/progressive environment; preferably small or medium but I would be willing to go to a large school -Likely majors: global/international studies, peace studies, journalism, social work Colleges I'm definitely applying to: -UMBC (perfect location; several majors I like; I like the quite/nerdy vibe) -Chatham University (good location; not many majors but they do have a global studies program that looks good; according to the NPC it will be affordable) -Temple University (good location; lots of appealing majors; will likely be the most expensive school on my list) -UMCP (not crazy about it but I want several affordable options; not many majors that appeal to me; perfect location) Colleges I'm considering: -St. Mary's College of Maryland (affordable; good choices of majors; terrible location) -American University (great location; lots of majors I like. However, I don't want to apply ED since I can't guarantee it will be affordable. I guess I could apply everywhere else EA, see what happens, and decide closer to the time if I want to apply RD?) Any schools I should cross off? Any to move from the considering list to the definitely list? Any new schools I should consider? Thank you all so much!

Roommates Boyfriend is always at the apartment. Help?

So my roommate and I have been living together for 1 semester and we have 1 more to go before the lease ends. Last semester was great (no problems at the time). But over the summer she got an attitude with me and made up a ton of reasons she didn't like me as a roommate and completely threw me off. Now we've been living back at the apartment for the new semester for 3 weeks everything's been fine EXCEPT every week Mon-Fri her boyfriend stays the night I understood the first week and was kinda confused the 2nd week but now I'm like wth. It's now starting week 3 and her and her boyfriend stayed over the weekend which means when I go back to school tomorrow he'll be there again all week. One problem is that since he doesn't drive it means if she drives him up with her Monday he has no way to get home until she takes him back, Friday (if they even go back). Because he sometimes stays the weekends with her as well as the week he's actually been at the apartment more than I have during this 3 week beginning of the semester (i go home every weekend) I do have a boyfriend that also stays the night. However it's a little different because I asked her before school started if she was fine with him staying the night 2-3 day's a week because this was his last semester and he decided to commute. She immediately agreed to this and said it was no problem. My boyfriend also is never there unless I am, meaning he has other places to be (school, friends ect) Her boyfriend NEVER leaves. He has no friends up here, doesn't go to school or work, and sits on the couch playing video games all day. Which annoys me because hes nice but sometimes I want the place to myself, when my roommate isn't there. Though he is crazy quiet and doesn't disturb me. I'm nervous to bring it up because she flipped out over the summer for no reason and I don't want to feel tense or passive aggressive in the apartment. I also don't want her to start having a problem with my friends coming over or my boyfriend staying the night if I complain about her boyfriend. Because I'm super non-confrontational and have social anxiety (and because since her boyfriends always there I can't get her alone but mostly the other reason) I want to text her instead of talk to her face to face because I can't seem to accurately get my point across in person but I don't know how. I know my personal skills are ass. What should I say or how should I word things? I can't live with a third person, especially a guy, since that means I can't walk around comfortable.

Colleges that do the CCS only as a Freshman

Does anyone know of schools that do the CCS but only in the Freshman year? Drexel gives you a package as a Freshman that does not change, unless you request a review due to financial changes. Would be interested in other colleges that give a package out as a Freshman for the entire 4 years.
